Plastic products are widely used in our lives, which means that it is very important to control the quality of plastic products. The most direct method is to carry out testing and certification. In such a wide range of applications, the detection content of plastic products is also different. This article lists 10 common testing items for your better understanding.
- CE certification
CE certification is a customs clearance certificate for EU countries, and it is also a sales and use certificate for products imported into the EU. Plastic products used in different fields have different certification testing standards, but CE certification is a compulsory certification, and the scope of CE certification is 27 countries in the European Union.
- UL certification
UL is short for Underwriters Laboratories. The UL Safety Laboratory is the most authoritative in the United States and the largest private institution engaged in safety testing and identification globally. UL certification is mainly the testing and certification of product safety performance, and its certification scope does not include the EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) characteristics of the product.
- Quality management system certification ISO9001
This certification is not about the product; it is about the business that produces the product. The company has obtained ISO9001 certification, which means that the company has established a complete quality management system in all aspects of management, practical work, supplier and distributor relationships, products, markets, and after-sales service. Keyanng has now obtained this certification.
- RoHS detection
RoHS is a mandatory certification established by EU legislation.
This certification is the EU Directive (2011/65/EU) on restricting the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electrical equipment. As we all know, ROHS certification is a certification to test the environmental protection of product materials and whether the toxic substances exceed the standard. The latest testing items of ROHS certification have been updated to 10 items.
In ROHS certification, 10 test substances include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), 2-Ethylhexyl phthalate (2-Ethylhexyl phthalate) ester) (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), cresyl butyl phthalate (BBP). It also stipulates that the content of cadmium should not exceed 0.01%.
- PASH carcinogen detection
The International Center for Cancer Research (IARC) (1976) lists 94 compounds as carcinogenic to experimental animals. Fifteen of them are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are carcinogens that PAHS tests mainly detect.
Because benzo-a pyrene is the first discovered environmental chemical carcinogen, and it is very carcinogenic, benzo (a) pyrene is often used as the representative of polycyclic aromatics, accounting for 1%-20% of all carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
Eighteen main compounds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Except for 1-methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene.
The 16 common substances that have been identified as PAHs mainly include:
- Naphthalene ● Acenaphthylene
- Acenaphthene ● Fluorene
- Phenanthrene ● Anthracene
- Fluoranthene ● Pyrene
- Benzo(a)anthracene ● Chrysene
- Benzo(b)fluoranthene ● Benzo(k)fluoranthene
- Benzo(a)pyrene ● Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene
- Dibenzo(a,h)anthracene ● Benzo(g,hi)perylene
- SGS detection
SGS is a comprehensive inspection agency that can perform various physical, chemical, and metallurgical analyses, including destructive and non-destructive testing—according to your requirements, providing a variety of inspections, testing, certification, and identification related to international trade. That is to provide quality inspection and certification services for all walks of life, various commodities, etc., and provide reports and certification after passing. SGS is an internationally renowned quality testing and system certification organization.
- FDA food-grade testing
FDA is the abbreviation of the United States Food and Drug Administration. It is an international medical review authority authorized by the United States Congress and the federal government. It is a high-level law enforcement agency specializing in food and drug management. All utensils, materials, etc., that are in direct contact with food and beverages or direct contact with the human tongue must pass FDA standard testing and certification before entering the US market.
- MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet)
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) can be referred to as SDS. It is a data sheet used by manufacturers and importers to clarify the physical and chemical properties of a product that may cause harm to users. The toxicity, hazard, and environmental impact assessments of the chemicals contained in the product are described in the MSDS. Introduce the precautions in the production, use, storage, and transportation of the product and the emergency handling methods.
MSDS, product test reports, and production technical descriptions are the same as important information for supply chain information transmission in product production. There are special regulations for MSDS in the EU REACH system (Annex II). MSDS is one of the necessary technical data for products imported into the EU.
- REACH 38 tests
REACH is the SVHC 38 test required by regulations for import into the European Union. The main content is to certify that daily products do not contain chemical substances harmful to the human body. Therefore, all daily-use products produced in the EU or imported into the EU market must pass the registration, inspection, and approval of the content of harmful chemical substances. Once the content exceeds the specified content, it cannot be sold in the EU market.
- Halogen-free environmental protection testing
Elements of group VIII in the chemical periodic table include fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine collectively referred to as halogen. Among them, astatine is a radioactive element almost absent in the product, halogen-free test – the first four elements exist in the form of organic matter in the product, especially in the polymer material. Multi-position organic halides are used in industry, the main halogen compounds currently used in products are PBB, PBDE, TBBP-A, PCB, hexabromododecane, tribromophenol, and short-chain chlorinated paraffin. There are also ozone-depleting substances, CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, etc., used for refrigerants and thermal insulation materials.
Halogen testing is now mandatory in no country. It is only required by certain types of customers in the industry, and how to do it depends on your requirements.
Although countries worldwide have not yet introduced regulations specifically targeting halogens, many international NGOs and environmental protection agencies are actively promoting halogen-free actions. At the same time, some large multinational companies have also formulated their environmental protection regulations, including restrictions or limits on halogens, and require their suppliers to comply with the restrictions or limits to produce green products.
