China has the largest number of prototype manufacturers in the world. More than 1 million buyers choose to source prototype parts from China every year. Many people wonder what makes Chinese prototyping so popular worldwide; what should you pay attention to when sourcing prototype parts from China? And how do you choose a quality Chinese prototype manufacturer?
We are a prototype manufacturing company with more than 100 employees and 12 years of experience in prototype manufacturing and international trade; we help customers worldwide to realize on-demand manufacturing projects in China. In this article, I’m excited to answer questions about prototype makers in the chapters that follow. Enjoy reading!
Why is prototyping in China so popular?
China has the largest number of prototype manufacturing plants of any country globally. In China’s 2876 cities (county-level administrative regions), each city has prototype manufacturing plants, ranging from small processing plants (maybe only two or three CNC milling machines) to large-scale listings Enterprises (e.g. Foxconn). Such a large supply chain can provide the world’s most abundant processing technology, customization options, and low prices. This is the core reason why Chinese prototyping is so popular.
What should I pay attention to when sourcing prototype parts from China?
Clear part drawings and specifications
Complete part drawings and specifications with all details clear, including all dimensions, tolerances, finish requirements, materials and packaging, etc.; this can save a lot of time, get the inquiry you want, communicate effectively with Chinese manufacturers, and avoid misunderstandings the greatest extent.
Certification
You should gather information about the certification required for imported products in your country or region and check with your supplier if certification is possible. For example, injection molding products can refer to”10 common types of certification for plastic products” in injection moulding products.
Shipping method
China’s international trade is very extensive. Take Shenzhen, where Keyanng is located, for example; you can choose three ways.
Express shipping
Express is the fastest way. DHL can deliver the goods directly to the door of the address you provide within 3-5 days. But it’s also the most expensive way. So only suitable for small quantities of prototype parts to be shipped.
Shipping by the sea freight forwarder
This is the most commonly used and recommended transportation method. Shenzhen has Yantian Port (the fourth-largest container port globally), which is very convenient for freight forwarders to use sea transportation. It usually takes about 25 days to reach the destination.
Air transport by the freight forwarder
Shenzhen Baoan International Airport is the fifth-largest freight hub in China. If your goods have requirements for transportation time, you can choose this mode of transportation; usually, it only takes 2-15 days to receive your goods, but the transportation cost is very high. Therefore, we generally do not recommend this type of transportation.
How do screen high-quality Chinese prototype manufacturers?
A good Chinese prototype maker should have the following 6 qualities. If you confirm that your supplier meets the following conditions before placing an order, your risk of being scammed will be greatly reduced.
- Qualified product quality: Qualified product quality is an important prerequisite for judging high-quality suppliers. For you, even if the price given by the supplier is lower, it is unacceptable that its product cannot meet the purchasing requirements.
- Good service level: The overall service level of the supplier refers to whether the supplier team can communicate with you smoothly because poor communication will cause different misunderstandings on the details of the order, resulting in irreparable losses. Therefore, service level should be a large factor in your consideration.
- Appropriate cost: The level of procurement cost affects the final output benefit. The cost cannot be understood only as the purchase price here because the cost also includes transportation fees, customs duties, etc.; if it is more expensive than the domestic purchase price, it will be meaningless.
- On-time delivery: Whether the supplier can organize the supply according to the agreed delivery period and delivery conditions directly affect the follow-up work. Therefore, being able to deliver on time is also one of the factors you need to consider when choosing a supplier.
- Sound supply management system: When evaluating whether the supplier meets the requirements, one of the important links is to see whether the supplier adopts the corresponding quality system for quality and management. For example, whether the enterprise has passed the IS09000 quality system certification.
- Perfect internal organization of supply: The internal organization and management of suppliers are related to suppliers’ supply efficiency and service quality in the future. If the supplier organization is chaotic, the efficiency and quality of procurement will decline. Even supply activities cannot be completed in a timely and high-quality due to the mutual shirking of responsibilities between supplier departments.
